I don't think I’ll get too many arguments when I say that this is one of the worst times to be a rap fan. People responsible for the music that raised a generation and turned rap into a globally loved art form such as Tupac, Biggie, Pun, and Eazy E are no longer with us, and the people getting the most shine today don’t even like being called rappers. TV and radio are flooded with copycat sound-alikes who continuously churn out the same tired formula, and it seems a label won’t even take a listen to your music unless you have a dance to go along with it. When did it change? A lot of people blame it on the rise of the digital age. Now while there are positives and negatives associated with it, I can understand the argument. Why should a rapper spend a year of their life trying to make a thought-provoking, cutting-edge record when they cant even profit from their hard work?
It seems that since the year 2000, the entire world has changed. Everything from news, to businesses, to television, and marketing have gone digital, and new technologies are being constantly created. The turn of the millennium also brought about a change in rap music, as the industry has been heavily commercialized and creativity has plummeted. Despite these changes, there have been some certified classics that have managed to shine through the watered down heap. This article is dedicated to the five best albums since the year 2000.
