Reasonable Doubt cover

Clark Kent recently had this dope interview (Clark Kent Interview - Watch here) where he states his opinion on a lot of matters, mostly pertaining to how nice Jay is. I didn’t appreciate him spewing his views on us like he was God’s messenger bringin us his word...Clark Kent is far from a Gabriel (i don’t believe in God by the way, don’t get it confused). But a part of what he’s saying is the truth. He failed to mention however, that Jay-z is one of the leading rappers who took out their hip hop element for money. But, when he was putting it on display during Reasonable Doubt....that was a guy who couldn’t be touched with a 10 foot pole by ANY rapper past, present or future.

To this day, fans don’t truly have an understanding for how dope the material on Reasonable Doubt was...NOT EVEN, the craziest of the hip hop heads. Like Kent said in the video above, only the dudes in the drug game understood the fly talk. There was a lot of ways to get lost in his words whether it be the complex metaphors, fly talk, or drug talk.

Jay-z has said this himself a hundred times...

So I would write it if y'all could get it
Bein intricate'll get you wood, critic
On the internet, they like you should spit it
I'm like you should buy it, nigga that's good business

Would write it if y’all could get it....his problem wasn’t ALL the fact that dope shit doesn’t sell....he’s also said many times including in his 10 year XXL interview and in his Reasonable Doubt Documentary - Watch Documentary - that a lot of his lyrics from Reasonable Doubt went over the heads of listeners.

Heads loved my last article on him (The Monster of the Double Entendre ) , even though a lot of you fronters on the forums were acting like you knew all that...OH PUHLEEZ...what’s crazy is, is that I only broke down D’evils in that one...so now let me get to can i live...

One of my favourite tracks ever recorded...any genre. Not only that, this is one of those joints where there is not a single flaw, from the flow which mimics the beat throughout, the lyrics (if you understand them all), and the beat (Irv gotti you get a pass for your entire corny ass career for this). Nah, scratch that...i can’t give props to hip hop producer’s who simply sample JACK an oldie:

Loses it’s appeal if i can make it myself. Cut it out and loop it, 2 minutes of work.

While I'm watchin every nigga watchin me closely
my shit is butter for the bread they wanna toast me
I keep my head, both of them where they supposed to be
Hoes'll get you sidetracked then clap from closed feet
I don't sleep, I'm tired, I feel wired like codeine, these days
a brother gotta admire me from four fiends away

Without getting into too much details of the basics...I will mention the easy breakdown to make  everything complete for my ‘slower’ younger readers. Butter + Bread = toast, pretty clever string of metaphors right off the bat. Keep my head...both of them meaning your head from the neck up...keeping your head in the game so-to-speak; and your other head, the head of your dick. You don’t have to be a hustler to know that women will fuck your shit up. Jay continues with this lesson by saying hoes will get you set up and killed in the game he’s in.

My pain wish it was quick to see, from sellin 'caine
Til brains was fried to a fricassee, can't lie
At the time it never bothered me, at the bar
Gettin my thug on properly, my squad and me
Lack of respect for authority, laughin hard
Happy to be escapin poverty, however brief
I know this game got valleys and peaks, expectation
For dips, four percent pertation we stack chips, hardly

This is Jay-z reflecting on the younger him getting money in the drug game. WISH it was quick to see, how the trials and tribulations of ruining lives and living in constant risk isn’t apparent in the beginning. Fricassee is one of those baller dishes and it’s basically a way to prepare poultry or chicken. I believe it has something to do with letting the meat stew in gravy. He’s saying that’s what the coke does to the brain of a fiend, that he is a supplier of....but AT THE TIME it didn’t bother him; Reflection.

The youth I used to be, soon to see a mill'in
No more, Big Willie my game has grown prefer you call me William
Illin for revenues, Rayful Edmonds like
Channel 7 news, round seven jewels, hand gettin the mic
Forgettin all I ever knew, convenient amnesia
I suggest you call my lawyer, I know the procedure
Lock my body can't trap my mind, easily
explain why we adapt to crime

Dope word play with him stepping his game up from “Willie” to “William”. Then he goes onto to mention one of the biggest dope dealers that ever lived....but for some reason is not really that talked about. Rayful Edmonds was a legend from D.C. who in his prime sold 2000 key’s in a week, raking in 70 million a month with 150 soldiers in the street. Not only that but he lived the life, it’s said that he once blew half a mil at a clothing store in one trip. Balled in every major city of the world.

Interesting fact...he was a big fan of the Hoyas, and used to chop it up with the players, Alonzo Mourning in particular. Zo was big time with the Hoyas and his coach felt Edmond’s was gonna get Zo in trouble and met with him in person to tell him to leave Mourning alone....and he did. Edmond’s went on to get locked up, with his mother and cousins as well for their involvement. Yet, behind bars he still managed to move massive amounts of coke over the phone lines. Got caught, and got hit with another 30 years where he then decided to snitch to lighten his load and help out his mom’s situation.

Back to the lyrics...Jay is now describing him getting locked up and “forgetting all i ever knew, convenient amnesia”, basically playing dumb to the cops...talk to my lawyer. Very clever way to say something very simple.

In the documentary I linked above Jay-z mentions how on Reasonable Doubt you hear his regrets for doing what he did, but at the same time realising the government and structure of society has got shit fucked up in the hood. “Explain why we adapt to crime” is one of those lines questioning the real culprit’s because Jay-z feels he was just a pawn in this game of chess.

I'd rather die enormous than live dormant that's how we on it
Live at the main event, I bet a trip to Maui on it
Presidential suites my resedential for the weekend
Confidentially speakin in codes since I sense you peekin
The NSX rental, don't be fooled my game is mental
We both out of town dog, what you tryin to get into?
Viva, Las Vegas, see ya, later at the crap tables
meet me by the one that starts a G up
This way no fraud Willie's present gambling they re-up
And we can have a pleasant time, sippin margaritas
Ge-ge-geyeahhh, can I live?
Can I live?

Rather die enormous than live dormant...classic, a line that will live on forever as a cliché. If you watch the Clark Kent interview linked up top, he talks about how people back then doubted Jay’s lyrics because he was claiming to be SUPER big time in the dope game....Kent also vouches for it. I’ll give you the flipside at the end of the article just because I don’t want to ruin the moment haha. Fly lyrics of jay-z making bets of trip’s to Maui on fights in Vegas.

He also clowns wannabe ballers a lot during his early days and throws a quick jab at them here...”meet me by the one that starts a G up”. For my youts who aren’t old enough to have been to a Casino, blackjack tables and every other table have limits...Jay is saying he plays at the table where there is a $1000 minimum. The reason for this is so he can avoid fake hustla’s (fraud willie’s) who go to the casino’s gambling away their re-up money! Haha, a good track needs  comedic relief.

Jay also says in that Reasonable Doubt documentary that he had no idea of song structure’s and what not back then...this track is living proof. The first verse is like 32 bars, no real hook, then a vicious 16ish bars...yet, still a classic.

My mind is infested, with sick thoughts that circle
like a Lexus, if driven wrong it's sure to hurt you
Dual level like duplexes, in unity, my crew and me
commit atrocities like we got immunity

Kind of a cross over of the shit he was talkin about on the D’evils, greed of money. “Circle like a lexus” meaning the Lexus symbol itself which is a weird lookin L in a circle. Metaphorically describes being driven on sick thoughts is sure to hurt you...just like driving a lexus fast/reckless will. More fly lyrics to lose the average listener with the “Dual level like Duplexes”.

Dual level is referring to dual level consoles and other dual level features found in cars, particularly in Lexus during the mid 90’s. Jay-z is clearly a fan of the LS model which he owned, baller mobile that was riddled inside and out with top-notch features. He also relates the Dual level with Duplexes...which is a 2 story pad. The term “Dual” and “Du” stands for double...just like dual-core processors for my young internet heads. It usually represents quality.

Then he says him and his dudes commit crimes like they got immunity...we all know of Diplomatic Immunity and being above the law, he’s not saying he is...but you’d think they were if you saw how reckless they are.

You guessed it, manifest it in tangible goods
Platinum Rolexed it, we don't lease
we buy the whole care, as you should

To manifest means to “show or demonstrate plainly”. Tangible goods are objects of value in physical form...like a car, jewlery, furniture. So he’s using a lot of big words to say the rolex was added with Platinum. Adding to it with tangible goods. Smart guy with a lot of school vocabulary, no?

This is where we get into the dopest line of the track...that no one mentions or praises because they didn’t get it...

My confederation, dead a nation, EXPLODE
on detonation, overload the mind of a said patient

A confederation is a group of empowered states and communities...and Jay takes the government side of things and compares it to him and his Boss dealers in the street metaphorically.

On one hand you got government confederation’s who start wars and drop bombs  that “dead a nation” on “detonation” of the bomb itself....overloading the common person’s mind with manipulation and what not. Jay-z takes that with him and his people (my confederation) dead a nation, meaning kill the black community with crack cocaine....as soon as they spark their pipes up. Spark, meaning to detonate. Overload the mind of “a said patient” in this case the ‘said patient’ is a crack fiend overloading his/her brain with smoke.

CRAZY HUH? Not only did this guy rhyme dead-a-nation with detonation...but he PERFECTLY describes the metaphorical relationship between the government and his crew. Usually a good metaphor only compares ONE thing...like a gun and a girl in Pac’s ‘Me and my Girlfriend’. But Jay just linked the killing of masses, different detonators, and different ‘said patients’. Fuckin GENIUS shit.

When it boils to steam, it comes to it
we all fiends gotta do it, even righteous minds go through this
True this, history school us to spend our money foolish
Bond with jewellers and, watch for intruders

When it boils to steam...is another way of him saying “when it boils down to it”. But, once again he’s gotta be all lyrical and throw in the boiling coke til it gets hard, relationship. So when it boils down to it, we are all fiends. Crack fiends need their drugs, Jay and them need their money....Even Righteous minds can relate to that. Then once again he goes blaming the government and history "school us to spend our money foolish"...saying they put these ideals into us in the first place, don’t blame me if im acting on them....i’d be in Africa with not much value on Capitalism if it wasn’t for you.

I stepped it up another level, meditated like a buddhist
Recruited lieutenants with ludicrous, dreams of
gettin cream let's do this, it gets tedious
So I keep one eye open like, C-B-S, ya see me
stressed right? Can I live?

He finishes it off with what is RECOGNIZED as the dopest line in the song...until now. Keep one eye open meaning going to sleep with one eye open...not trusting anyone. Comparing that to CBS’ symbol of the one eye.

Like i said, Dope track with too much detail in it’s lyrics. A lot of it is based on a lifestyle that Jay-z and his friends say is factual....but there are others who have questioned it including he big homie Calvin Klein who was a beast in the coke game himself – and who was praised by Jay-z in his music “never felt more alive/ than ridin’ shotgun in Klein’s green five” – claims Jay-z is Fugazzi. He also said that Kent begged him to back Jay’s tales  during the time Nas questioned him to make his lyrics believable. Kent did end up vouching for him on radio while he was locked up....but he says that was only because Jay-z promised to hold him down when he got out, which he didn’t do. So then Klein went on his rampage to dis-credit him.

 Klein Speak's on Jay-z

Whatever the case may be, you can’t take anything away from the guys talent. Reasonable Doubt, once fully understood...is the best album ever made, and the highest level of Emceeing ever witnessed.

Boards are going up in a week...im recruiting some industry cats, and fellow heads to serve as OG’s of knowledge on the boards. Go ahead and sign up, up top. The more the merrier, even though we will be keeping it very tight with the clowns. Just looking to bring together as many heads as possible for some good discussion.

Keep it locked...

His Only Dope Album?......
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER   |2008-10-01 10:23:02
Yeah unless you can tell me another of jays albums that's dope from the first track to the last...don't get me wrong there are songs on other albums i keep in the cycle but this is the only full album (in my opinion) that's dope from track 1 to track 15 that i would recommend to anybody.... after this he fell off and started making songs for the more sensitive folks in the suburbs...and to prove this he headlined Glastonbury in the UK because of his appeal to people who wouldn't necessarily consider them selves hip hop fans they just like what he talks about because it sounds nice and it rhymes.

Well Just To Name One...Black Album...December 4th....What More Can I Say...Encore...Change Clothes...Dirt Off Your Shoulders...Threat...Moment Of Clarity...99 Problems...Interlude/PSA...Justify My Thug...Allure...My 1st Song...None Are Skippable...At 1st Glance "Change Clothes" Is...Until I Listen Closer And Hear This Like "Let I Breathe...Jedi Knight...The More Space I Get..The Better I Write"...Black Album (In My Opinion) Is The Perfect Balance Between Lyricism And Still being Able To Convey A Honest Message...There Are More...
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER   |2008-10-01 12:51:23
Nah the black album aint dope its famous for one song and that's 99 problems all im saying is in life when you set the bar and you don't clear it then your doing something wrong and the thing jay z is doing wrong is putting out commercial bullshit for 12 year old boys and girls to listen too and i cant believe you used the black album as an example that would be like me comparing illmatic with i am or me against the world with pacs life..the only people that think jay z has more dope albums than reasonable doubt tend to be groupies or hardcore fans that wont have a bad word said against him...
THE ILLEST   |2008-10-01 14:09:52
who doesn't get this shit? most of it's obvious

good article on breakin it down but if there's listeners out there not catchin this shit with 1 or 2 listens they must be some crack babies for real.

jay-z is amazing at rap. although i honestly think some of the drug game and clark kent shit is bullshit but everyone is gonna vouch to keep jay at #1 status cuz it works for them too y'know?

Im gonna cosign KNOWLEDGE here, not all the way...Jay might have had more than 1 dope album...but none at the level of RD

I was disappointed by the Black Album...just because i remember him saying it was gonna be a prequel to RD...and he was gonna start writing again like he did on RD...and it was suppose to be riddled with metaphors....absolutely no singles, videos...straight hip hop...THUS the BLACK ALBUM

what does he do...gets Pharells corny ass...and make that garbage change clothes....followed by a single with Rick Rubin? Sorry, that's no D'evils to me

all that money and u had to go back for a few more pennies

that's what im trying to say his stature/popularity doesn't echo the quality of materiel he has been putting out i think GZA has been putting out better solo materiel with out the level of hype jay z gets and for me that's because GZA isn't as commercial as jay z..i guess im not a great fan of commercial rap give me a mix tape any day...its quite hard to say that cause in a few weeks someone will read this and film me throwing out some super man's while im drunk at the club and shit

then because it was kinda obvious, everyone wants to go acting like they knew it all for their hip hop props

96 was a long time ago...and I too get confused as to why people are still saying hes the best...i can name 10 better at least since

true i probably couldn't name ten better albums than RD but damn the shit that gets released under pacs name is better than some of the shit jay z been putting out i mean come on the G.O.A.T does not release two albums with R.Kelly both of which were whack as hell..blue print and blue print 2 may as well have been the same album...the black album never lived up to the hype 1 or maybe 2 good songs the rest were pretty average and that bullshit with linkin park if that aint the biggest money spinning load of shit i have ever seen in my life then damn if you can take albums like that in to account and still think jay z is G.O.A.T then you need your head looking at.

Listen...To Say Jay-z Only Has One Dope Album Is The Most (Insert Negative Word I Cant Think Of Here) Thing I Have Ever Heard...Maybe I Just Dont Have Your Taste...I Hate Listening To So Called "Back Packers" Or "Super Lyrical" Rappers...Cause They Lack In Everything But Lyrics And Flow Half Of The Time...Black Album Is DOPE....And For You To Pick Out 99 Problems Out Of Every Track On There....That's Crazy....Surely You Have Something Against Jay If You Cant Recognize Songs Like Moment Of Clarity, Allure, December 4th...I Think You've Forgotten Why Jay's Music Resonated With So Many People...Had Little To Do With Lyrics (Which You Seem To Be Stuck On)...I Can Relate To Things He Says...And He's A More Subtle Rapper Than Most...The Little Things He Says Can Have ALOT Of Meaning...I Had To Hear The Line "Little Brothers Ring Fingers Get Cut Up To Show Mothers They Really Got Em" To Really Realize The Weight Of What He Said...Or Even Lines Like "In Heaven Lookin Over Me...Or In Hell Keep It Cozy"...How Many People You Know Actually Accept The Fact That Their Loved Ones May Not Actually Be In A Better Place...That's Big...Idk...I Just Appreciate The Little Things...It's All Opinion Though...Dont Try To Discredit Dude As A Rapper Though...If Anything...Blame His Fans That Love Him For Songs Like "Big Pimpin".....
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER   |2008-10-02 08:04:10
i never used to have a problem with jay until he said he watered down his lyrics to double his dollars now that aint what hip hop is about fair play to the dude he got paid but he got paid for selling out...now as for the reason i picked out 99 problems is because that's the sort of song that people who wouldn't consider them selves hip hop fans will listen to the same as big pimpin
and Ive already wrote it somewhere in one of my other posts that im not trying to discredit his talent but i dont like commercial rap and that just happens to be what jay z has been selling since RD now i know that if people didn't buy it it wouldn't get made but god damn he dont need the money no more ....look at ice cube he dropped his label so he could release some real shit

the best comparison i can make is compare jays lyrics to immortal techniques lyrics and see the difference between commercial hip hop and then the hip hop that gets released from a street nigga...now i know jay was a street nigga but that's the key word.WAS. i dunno perhaps jay aint hungry no more
Be Forworned   |2008-10-02 09:15:33
And Immortal Technique Lacks In Everything Except Lyrics And Flow...But I See You On That "I Like Niggas Dat Keep It Real Shit"...."Im In Da Streets...I Wanna Hear Street Niggas"...That's A Bit Adolescent...

But Really....What Does Jay Have To Be Hungry For...You Just Like A different Style Of Rap...You Focus More On Lyrics Than A Rapper Being An Actual Balanced Artist...Im Not Big On Lyrics...If You Gon Have The Greatest Lyrics In The World But Sound Like A Zombie When You Rap...Go Write A Book...This Rap Shit Aint For You
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER   |2008-10-02 09:20:58
i think we are just going to have to agree to disagree on this one and i dont just listen to immortal technique because "Im In Da Streets...I Wanna Hear Street Niggas". i like tech more because his lyrics have meaning jays use to but now he would rather talk about how many cars he got or how much jewelery he got the shits tired and its see through..

I appreciate that, cause i was pretty sure that was the case...but everyone wants to be a hip hop genius...and everyone got the biggest dick

well then i will share MY feelings on what that line COULD also mean...

the thing is...that being a simple double meaning isnt enough really....because that last 16 on that song was some of the most complex writing ive ever seen....and he saved that line for last, but how people see it now, isnt dope enough to finish off a super dope verse

ill share my thoughts in the next article
