The characters of the story are:

Jay-Z - main character
Victory (V) - Female, The object of Jay's affection
Defeat - Female, Victory's sister
History - Jay-Z & Victory's son
Death - Female
Success - Female

In search of victory, she keep eluding me

Jay summarizes the main idea/plot of the story he's about to tell right off the bat with the first line. Jay is in search of Victory, a
girl character in this story who constantly teases him by being seen around him when he knows that he can't be with her at the moment (she keeps eluding me).

If only we could be together momentarily

He's not asking for much he knows he can't be with Victory forever but all he wants is a taste, a one night stand in a way.

We can make love, we'll make history

With this line Jay is sayin two things, one being that together, he and Victory could literally make history and be a highly successful and happy couple, the other being the creation of a child between the two named history.

Why won't you visit me? Until she visit me
Ill be stuck with her sister, her name is defeat
She gives me agony, so much agony
She brings me so much pain, so much misery
Like missin your last shot and fallin to ya knees
As the crowd screams for the other team

Jay's frustration with not being with Victory grows and he settles for Victory's sister Defeat. Defeat does not make Jay happy though, she only brings more bad things into his life and he compares the feeling of being with Defeat to the literal meaning of defeat by painting the picture of a basketball player missing the game winning shot and hearing the celebrations of the winning team's fans.

I practiced so hard for this moment victory don't leave
I know what this means, I'm stuck in this routine
Whole new different day, same old thing

Continuing with his basketball analogy Jay tells us how he prepared himself for this moment everyday by practicing that shot that will take him to Victory but he still can't make it, once again he's let victory slip through his fingers...Back to square one.

Read the rest inside...

All I got is dreams, nobody else could see
Nobody else believes, nobody else but me
Where are you victory? I need you desperately
Not just for the moment, to make history.....

Jay is now getting increasingly impatient with his situation and reaffirms his need to be with Victory, however now he acknowledges a small taste or moment isn't enough he needs to be with Victory for good because he never wants to be with Defeat again, he wants to make history.

(Chorus)

So now I'm flirting with Death, hustlin like a g
When Victory wasn't watching, took chances repeatedly

We are now introduced to a 3rd character in this story - Death. Once again death represents its literal meaning and another girl in the life of Jay-Z. Since Victory was not paying attention to him, Jay decides to take chances and tries his hand at the dope game "hustling like a g". With the life of a hustler comes risk and the chance that he could be killed at any moment. Everyday Jay lives that life he flirts with death.

As a teenage boy, before acne
Before I got Proactive I couldn't face she
I just threw on my hoody and headed to the streets

Jay reminisces back to his teenage years, before he was motivated and striving for a better life. (Proactive also represents the facial cream used to clear your face from blemishes.) At this time Jay couldn't even fathom being with Victory (she) in fact he could not even face her. *Notice the use of the word face after the Proactive double entendre*. The reason Jay mentions wearing a hoody was to further the idea that he did not want to be seen. Hoods for the most part obscure your face from being seen if worn up.

I swear I met Success well live together shortly
Now Success is like lust, she's good to the touch
She's good for the moment but she's never enough

While on the streets, Jay meets Success. Success is another girl around the way and Jay likes her a lot, enough to move in with her. Jay soon realizes Success is only good for the sex, she's a short term fix until he can be with Victory. He compares the feeling of being with Success to the feeling of lust. Lust alone does not make a relationship, its never enough, and neither is the success for Jay.

Everybodys had her, she's nothing like V
But success is all I got un fortunately

Eventually Jay sees Success as a girl that gets around a lot. There's no more appeal to being with something every other man has been with. The excitement of success is lost however Jay deals with it because at this point in his life, his success is all he has. Better to have something than nothing right?

But I'm burnin down the block hopping in and outta v's
But Somethin tells me that there's much more to see
Before I get killed, cuz I can't get robbed

Jay has realized now that there's more to life than the hustle game and makes up his mind that he wants to strive for it.

So before me Success and Death minage

This is an incredible line because of the meanings jay has given to both words throughout the story. In a literal sense these two girls from Jay's neighborhood who represent two sides of Jay get together. In actuality however Success represents the rewards of his hustling career while Death on the other hand represents the risk and consequences that life brings. These two opposite components of Jay's life now collide and intertwine making it all the more clear that Jay is destined to be with Victory as she is the only girl for him.

I gotta get lost, I gotta find V
We gotta be together to make history...

Another way to represent the realization that the life he's leading is not the one for him, Jay says he's gotta get lost, he has to leave this life and make it big.

(Chorus)

Now Victory is mine she tastes so sweet
She's my trophy wife, you comin with me

We are taken to a time where Jay has finally bagged Victory. She's his trophy wife meaning he parades her around with him everywhere, where he goes, she's going with him. 'You comin with me" could also be read as 'You cumin with me', a precursor to the next line which Jay references having a child with Victory.

We'll have a baby who stutters repeatedly
We'll name em history he'll repeat after me

Jay & Victory's baby will be named History. The baby stuttering and repeating after Jay are all ways to symbolize the phrase & notion that history repeats itself

He's my legacy,
Son of my hard work, future of my past, he'll explain who I be

History will represent all of what Jay-Z was and is.

Rank me amongst the greats either one, two, or three
If i aint number one then I failed you victory
Aint in it for the fame - that dies within weeks
Aint in it for the money - can't take it when you leave

Its not about fame or fortune to Jay, none of that material stuff lasts. You can't take it to heaven/hell with you when you die. Jay wants to be ranked as the best rappers ever, however he makes it clear that if he's not considered THE best ever than he has let Victory down. 'Can't take it when you leave' could also be a precursor to the next set of lines, meaning that Victory can't stand when Jay's not around.

I wanna be remembered long after you greave
Long after I'm gone, long after I breathe

Jay has no intentions of being forgotten in this rap game and in life. This is one of the central reasons why he needed to have a son so that History could keep his memory alive long after Jay breathes (or stops breathing).

I leave all I am in the hands of history
That's my last will and testimony

In his will, Jay leaves everything to his son History. It's his last wish - History will make Jay immortal.

This is much more than a song it's a baby shower
I been waiting for this hour, history your ours...

Jay concludes the story by stating this is a baby shower or a celebration of History being made. He's been waiting for this moment his whole life and he's got it now.

(Chorus)

When he is talking about success and he says

"Everybodys had her, she's nothing like V" he saying she sleeps around she nothing like V as in victory and as in virgin, he is saying success is loose.
